El Taberno is a jungle side restaurant in the beach road in Tulum that artfully and creatively has created a traditional Mexican dining experience that locals and residents talk about every day. Combine an all day breakfast with progressive Mexican dinners served by a local staff and a great Mexican wine list and you have a winner, El Taberno.
The surroundings are as thoughtful as the menu. The artistic flare of the owners, Laura and Paj is seen in the decore as much as in the food. To top it off, they have a wonderful sense of humor that will make you smile and happy. How do they do it? And how do they do it consistantly. In one word, it is passion, a passion for Mexico, a passion for Tulum, a passion for food and a passion for art and creativity.
The El Taberno Story
This little jungle restaurant is making a mark on locals who frequent the all day breakfast and new menu, and international visitors that are happy to be introduced to true and authentic Mexican cuisine. The menu and restaurant has been described as taking a progressive and innovative approach to Mexican cuisine. The chef uses local ingredients and traditional recipes but adds a non-traditional flare to either the presentation or people’s perceptions. If you thought you knew Mexican food, come to El Taberno where you will be challenged not only with the authentic recipes they work with but your ideas about Mexican wines. With little Mexican wine exported to other countries, very seldom are we able to truly understand the grapes and vineyards in Mexico. El Taberno has carefully selected wines and ingredients to showcase the best of Mexican food.
Think chilled avocado, cucumber and mint soup, pear salad with dried cherries, soft fresh cheese, walnuts and honey. Grilled shrimp are tossed in an habanero butter. The menu changes as ingredients change, the flavors change as the chef discovers more Mexican recipes that he wants to share.
Tempted? I would be. Located 7 kms down the Tulum beach road, it is well worth the drive or the walk to EL Taberno where organic produce is used when available, culinary art is appreciated and guests walk away happy, if not elated by the dinner, lunch or breakfast they just experienced.
