We have had the pleasure of meeting lots of New Yorkers and East Coast residents that find Tulum Mexico a nice and easy getaway from the north. We are closely watching the aftermath of the storm that hit the East Atlantic coast this past week and want to share our hurricane experiences and thoughts with our friends and neighbors to the north.

We are huge fans for life lessons, which may be one of the reasons we chose to live in another country. We know that the East Coast will recover and we know that every single person will do their best to work towards that recovery! WE have done it and will most likely do it again, it is not fun while it is happening but there is an end, really, really there is.

Momondo.com – Now this is smart. A bunch of young techies have put together an all in one travel search engine that will find you the deals on flights and car rentals. Keep in mind they do not have all options so if you don’t find the option that you are looking for go to Kayak.com for more deals.

Tripit.com – consolidate your travel information and get driving directions, flight gates, instructions, everything that a travel agent would provide for you but you drive it. The final product is a one page itinerary sheet with all your trip information in one spot

Tripadvisor – The go to site for any traveler that wants to plan their trip around guest recommendations. Tripadvisor has broken away from it parent company Expedia and is coming into its own with more social media integration, more photo and video upload options and yes more review options. They are savvy and they are smart and so are the people who use Tripadvisor.

Irrive.com – Scrap-booking has always been a favorite travelers pastime but there is so little time to actually put it together. Irrive does it for you, taking all of your social media posts and creating your own trip scrapbook. We have seen it in the works and it is pretty impressive! The kicker is, you still have to post on your other social media sites so Irrive can grab the content and make your scrap-book. When will someone make a social media site that takes your thoughts and just posts, oh maybe not…that may not be a great idea…

Virutaltourist.com – this is one of the oldest social media sites that act like a Facebook page and Tripadvisor. There is information posted by local residents and visitors so you get the entire experience. This is not as well populated as Tripadvisor but that means that you become an expert faster and easier than other social media sites.

Tripwolf.com – another fun social media travel site owned by the travel guide books Footprints, that is much like a Yelp site, with votes and reviews. Footprint guides were good in book form so check this out and see if it works for you. Integrates with other social media sites as well so you post on one site and share with others.

Vacation first, post second or you may miss your vacation

Your priority on your vacation should be, your vacation. There is nothing worse than being on a tour, walking around, driving in the car or just sitting on the beach and feel like you have been working all day….take a break from your social media during the day and upload your photos, comments and posts at the end of the day. Stay connected to your destination first, your travelling companion second and then your smartphone. If it is that you do not have wifi where you are traveling, take your photos and videos and then upload when you get back, and journal after the fact. It is not imperative that you upload your photos to social media that second, no one will really know the difference. But it is great to have a log of your travels at some point that easily be shared with all of your friends in one post. This is the greatest benefit of social media by far. No longer do you have to create slide shows, invites and a dinner or snacks to show your vacation photos….those days are over..and no longer do you need to receive phone calls from people asking about your opinion of X place or X place. If you post on social media, all you need to do is refer people to your Tripadvisor profile or your Tripwolf profile and they have all the information.

Restaurants, stores and hotels line the Tulum beach road

Casa de las Olas is near the end of the Tulum beach road so all guests get the luxury of seeing every single detail this road has to offer. LIttle neighborhoods exist at about every two kilometers, this being a  group of restaurants and stores that seem to have gathered in one area and have formed a community of restaurant owners, servers and shop keepers who work together to highlight their unique area on the stretch.

These micro-communities seem to also have a theme to their unique area. It could be organic and sustainable products or art and clothes or just a group of interesting food options through small corner stores and restaurants.

Jungle and Cenotes on the Tulum beach road

When you see the videos below the most interesting landscape on the Tulum beach road is the jungle and cenotes that line each side of the road. The ocean is about 100 meters rom the road but the jungle covers that view in most cases so the visitor has no idea that what behind the palm trees and plants is the Mexican Caribbean. There is one little area that has a spectacular view of the Caribbean about 2.5 kms down the road. There are two cenotes that visitors can visit, one at around 6 kms and one at 10.5 kms.Both of there cenotes have a fresh and salt water mix and are mangrove cenotes.

What you need to know when driving the Tulum beach road

1. The entire road is paved up to the Sian Kaan gates

2. There are various unidentified speed bumps all along the road so drive slowly. They will pop up when you least expect it. In spanish speed bumps are called topes.

3. Watch for bicycles, walkers and motorbikes. Watch for poorly parked cars on the side of the road.

4. Watch out for the blue crabs that run across the road, all, the, time.These little creatures can be in packs or solo so drive slowly so you can stop and let them cross.

5. Watch for neighbourhood dogs that seem to think that they own the road. It is no unusual to see a dog in the middle of the road, hanging out.

6. Watch for oversized trucks. Deliveries happen all day long and though the road is a two lane road, it is wide enough for two small cars, not a large delivery truck and car so be aware of these oversized vehicles.

The Tulum beach road is a forever memory for many guests and a daily drive for us. It is hip, chic and fun, safe, eclectic and interesting. There are few places where industry works so well with jungle and cenotes but the Tulum beach has found a way to do.

Tulum beach road Videos – Enjoy!

This is a favorite pastime and it would be a shame not share. If you are up for an all natural spa day while on vacation in Tulum, we have the process and Tulum stores have the products. In total all of these natural products may cost you 10 usd and there is enough for about 5 spa treatments! Massages are not included, this would have to be done by a certified masseuse but man will your skin feel and look great!

Products needed for your natural beach spa

Before you arrive in at Casa de las Olas or if you want to take a quick trip into town to gather all of these needed supplies, pick up the following items for your full body spa exfoliation.

1. Natural honey – get a bigger bottle in case you end up wanting some for your tea

2. Full grain sugar

3. avocados – buy some super ripe ones about 4

4. Sea salt in its natural form (not the processed you can buy rock sea salt in a bag for 5 pesos!)

5. Baking soda

Head to the beach and get ready for the spa treatment of your life!

Admittedly this is best done in the middle of the day when your pores are open and you have been sweating! Go into the ocean and get wet! Go back to the shore and take the Tulum beach sand and rub your entire body with the sand, you you heard my right, entire body with the fine and beautiful sand of Tulum. Give yourslef a good scrub, ankles, stomach, back, legs and your face. Dive back into the water and get rid of the sand. You will start to feel the difference already.

Go back to the beach and mix the honey with the sea salt and sugar. It should be a paste when you are done. Now rub this mixture all over your body, just like you did the sand and you will start to replace some much needed minerals back into your skin. Your skin is your largest organ so anything that you put on your skin will help your entire body, inside and out.

Run back to the ocean and rinse off your second exfoliation. Now your skin is feeling even better! rinse well and go back to the beach for your final cleaning and moisturizing.

Open the avocado and mush it in your hands. The mushed meat of the avocado is then smeared onto your skin. If you want to put some in your hair as well as it has been getting dry from the sun, go for it! It is great for your body and hair. Wait until the avocado dries, about 15 to 20 minutes. Stand on the beach, it is not recommended to lie on your towel as avocado can stain a bit. Your bathing suit is fine, the towel and beach chairs should be avoided if you have put the fruit on the front and back of your body.

Once dry, dive back into the ocean and rinse the avocado off. Sily may come to mind, moisturized will definately come to mind, smooth as a babies bottom will cross your mind as well. To finish things off, take the baking soda and do a final exfoliation on your face, the fine texture and of the baking soda and the natural chemical make-up of this product will do a fine exfoliation of your face, the dirt that accumulates in your pores and will is used as a finishing agent.

Your body has never felt this good and a spa treatment has never cost so little!

One key portion of this exfoliation is the ocean water. The natural minerals in the ocean helps to rebuild your skin and body. YOu can do this treatment at home in your shower or in your bath tub, it just is not as much fun and the ocean will not be coming through your shower head to give you that extra boost of minerals.

When you do this treatment, there is no harm to the ocean as all ingredients are natural. The ingredients are so inexpensive in Tulum as they are readily available in local fruit stands and corner stores it is really quite incredible. Tulum is a great beach town in the Mayan Riviera that can be a bit difficult to understand for the first time visitor. Many visitors think that Tulum is just the Tulum Ruins, and that is the extent of this pretty and precious little town. For visitors that stay at small hotels in Tulum, they hear references to the Tulum ruins, Tulum town and Tulum beach. Huh? Tulum is Tulum right? Yes, and no. Tulum is a less developed city in the Mayan Riviera and locals have created distinct words or references when referring to areas in Tulum.It is all Tulum is just is a better way of explaining the different areas.

Understand the 3 ares of Tulum before you arrive for your Tulum vacation

When people refer to the Town of Tulum they are referring to the pink portion of Tulum. This is where the banks, municipal offices, shopping and off the beach hotels are. If you are needing to shop for food, shop for gifts or just have a break from the beach, Tulum town is the residential portion of Tulum where staff, owners and Tulum residents live. It is a real community that looks after their people and work slowly to make sure that community services and infrastructure are in place for residents. Houses and businesses in Tulum have access to internet, water and electricity.

The second area that people refer to are the Tulum ruins which is the first stop in Tulum in the north end of town. On this map you will see the Mayan ruins in the bottom right hand corner. This is the archeological site of the Tulum ruins which are located on the beach. There is a small mall that has restaurants, craft stores and convenience stores. At the entrance to the ruins you will find a row of artisans that sell Mexican crafts and art.

The third area that confuses most people and is hard to find for new visitors to Tulum is the Tulum beach. The Tulum beach can be reached by car if you take the ‘beach road’ the road that intersects Hwy 307 at the Super San Francisco, 7-eleven (yes there is one) and the new but hidden grocery store Chedraui. This road is labeled Hwy 109 in the map (no one will refer to this road as the 109 by the way) and leads you to the Tulum beach at a t junction. The T junction will lead you to the north part of the Tulum beach, and the south part of the Tulum beach, entrance to the Sian Kaan and eventually Punta Allen. South of the T junction is where most of the Tulum small hotels are on the Tulum beach. There are few hotels to the north but there are some still to the north and one or two restaurants. The fisherman’s coop is also to the north.

Why is Tulum so confusing?

Tulum is only confusing to new visitors, but rightly so, it is confusing. The confusion comes from the large distances in between the three areas. Unlike other beach towns in the area, Akumal, Playa del Carmen or Cancun, Tulum has large areas in between the beach, the town and the ruins that have little development making the surrounding areas seem uninhabited, or just nothing to see.

Boy could that be far from the truth. There are 3 kilometers between the Tulum ruins and Tulum town. The town is a great little town that is residential on the back street and business focused on the main highway. There is 4 kms between Tulum town and the Tulum beach T junction where the Tulum beach road that runs along the Caribbean coast for over 10 kilometers. If you are feeling adventurous and have a whole day, you can venture the 40 additional kilometers to Punta Allen. The road to Punta Allen is not a great road so be prepared for a bumpy ride. The Tulum beach road is paved so there are no issues on this beautiful coastal road.

We will continue to explain in more detail the three areas of Tulum as each area is unique, very different and offers visitors a very different experience in each of these three areas that make up Tulum.

Casa de las Olas is located at the end of the Tulum beach road, 10 kilometers from the T junction. It is the last property before you reach the entrance to the Sian Kaan (where the bad road starts) and provides guests with a very private, secluded and unique Tulum beach experience.

When people think of Tulum they have a mental image of large, white sand beaches, cool places to stay, ecclectic community and a night sky that has more stars than most people have ever seen. This is picture is true, all of it, but what many don’t know is that the landscape is much more diverse than this. The beach is large, and beautiful and wonderful. But if you walk across the street to the jungle, a whole other world awaits. If you take  crusie to the south, an even larger and more diverse world awaits that offers a whole other side to your Tulum vacation. Envision fresh water lagoons, dense jungle, over 1.5 million acres of protected land that is full of completely different activities.

Sian Kaan biosphere south of Casa de las Olas – our eco neighbours

Facts – Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve – a 1.5 million acre protected Unesco World Heritage site, the largest protected area in the state of Quintana Roo and the Mayan Riviera. Building is limited and the area is dense. The only way to see the biosphere is by water, in the ocean and the hundreds of lagoons that are inland.

Activity options – Guided boat tours in the lagoon, guided ocean tours in small boats. Kayak through the Caapechen Lagoon and learn about the various flora, fauna, and ecosystems of the Reserve.

Kayaking can be guided or unguided, take your pick

Sometimes it is nice to discover new places on your own. Seasoned kayakers are wired to this type of adventure. Kayakers work hard at their education and skills to ensure independance and discovery. Different tour operators offer guided and unguided tours of the Sian Kaan, and our preference is both! Just to make things interesting we do support both options and hope that guests have time for both.

The guided tour brings a wealth of knowledge and know-how from local guides who know the area, the birds, the interesting places and cool details. They are fun to hang with, give you a great overview and will fill you in on some of their experiences in the Sian Kaan.

The unguided tour after your overview, will bring you to areas of the lagoon that you want to explore. The surprises can be fun, the adventure always a thrill and time on the water with a kayaking partner, pricelesss! the difference between these two experiences rounds out anyone’s Tulum experience.

Cool thing is kayaking and bird watching is best done first thing in the morning. Take a cruise, discover something new and then head to the beach and stay cool for the rest of the day. Your kayaking excursion does not have to be an entire day so it leaves you open to other experiences that Tulum has to offer, and that is many!

Diversity is what we love about Tulum and our eco neighbor the Sian Kaan.

Take a walk, kayak, take a drive or a bike into the protected area of our neighbor the Sian Kaan. It is almost like saying that Yellowstone Park is out neighbor or the grand canyon, or for you Canadians out there Alconquin Park or the Rockies. All of these areas offer activities close by that challenge you physically and mentally.

When vacationing, your accommodations are one of the most important parts of your vacation and how you rate the success of your vacation. Choosing a hotel in Tulum is tough as there are many options to choose from and many different types of accommodations to satisfy travelers.

Finding your perfect Tulum hotel is achievable but it needs some thought first. The diversity makes choices difficult and reservations can be a chore. We have looked at some of the important criteria that could make picking your Tulum accommodation easier and faster.

Choosing a Tulum hotel for your next Tulum vacation

1. Determine your budget – Tulum hotels can range from 10 usd a night 800 usd per night. Your personal budget will weed out a lot of the possible candidates and leave you with a handful of possible locations.
2. Determine the area – You have three areas to choose from, by the Tulum ruins, in the town of Tulum or on the Tulum beach. Prices vary considerably, with accommodations by the ruins the least expensive, hotels in the town of the Tulum middle of the road with some very inexpensive options and The Tulum beach accommodations being the most expensive.
3. Define your comforts – Is a hammock sufficient, shared bathrooms and a small cabin for two or is something more concrete with some comforts more your style of vacationing. Budget and accommodations may match up, sometimes it does not. There are hotels for 70 usd a night on the Tulum beach but it is shared showers, public bathrooms and hard beds.  More expensive hotels will provide better quality rooms and private bathrooms.
4. Determine your customer service expectations – You will be able to tell at the booking process or inquiry stage if the customer service at the hotel you are considering is up to your standards. Like accommodations, customer service varies so when making inquiries see how you feel about it.
5. Ease of booking – Tulum is not necessarily in tune with the speed of mobile, internet booking and fast vacation planning. Check out how has online booking and which hotels have invested into easy reservation systems. This could make planning your Tulum vacation easy and secure!

First time Tulum visitors may find Tulum vacations hard to plan due to the lack of technology that the Area has. Many beach locations do not internet so they travel into town once a day or once every few days to check email. This can make the booking process slow. With the beautiful beach, the glorious evenings, great restaurants and the chill atmosphere, romance is normally up there. If you are not looking for it, it wont come your way nor will it effect your vacation, but lovely places sometimes sprout lovely relationships.

Online forums support Tulum as a solo travelers destination. It is easy to get to, provides a really beautiful atmosphere, there is lots to do, or lots not to do.
